History A-levels: the rules of essay writing in 5 steps
For the intermediate written exam, you'll have to write a short and long essay, which will give you a total of 50 points. The former is worth 17 points and is on a universal history topic, the latter is worth 33 points and is on Hungarian history. In each case, you must choose between a short universal and a long Hungarian assignment on

a different period - one up to 1849, the other after 1849! However, the choices are indicated on the written exercise sheet, so you don't have to think about the pairings, just tick which one you choose.
How do you get started on a max-point essay?
1. Interpret the assignment!
The first step in any successful assignment is to read and understand the instructions carefully. Don't just start writing your essay based on the title, because it is specifically stated what you need to cover and you will only get points for those elements. For example, St Stephen's Church Policy; here you do not need to write about his marriage to Queen Gizella, only about the measures he took to establish the Christian Church in Hungary.
2. In each case, write a short outline.
On a drafting sheet, point out the essential elements you want to write about: the most important concepts, people, dates and events related to the topic. The occurrence of these will also earn you valuable points according to the revision key. Set the time and space in the introduction. Place it exactly in which historical period, year, geographical area and specific landscape.

3.Source analysis is one of the most important parts!
Two sources are usually given after the task description. This could be a short quote, picture, map, diagram, cartoon, piece of art; anything that relates to the period. All of these are worth points, so if you forget to write about them, there is no way your essay can be maxed. Interpret the sources and then summarise them in your own words. "As shown in source number one...We know this and this fact, as evidenced by excerpt number one...As shown in source number one..."
Facts and figures
But source analysis is not enough for successful essay writing. You must build more than half of the content from your own knowledge, showing your knowledge of the topic. There are

dates and events in the history atlas, but this is not enough! It is important for your teacher to see that you understand cause and effect, know the background, and see the historical period as a whole.
5. Diction and spelling
Even though it is a history exam, correct language is worth valuable points. Write a title and use triple spacing. Make sure you write well-formed round sentences, follow a train of thought, don't flit between figures, and don't make huge spelling mistakes.
